Today's Forecast

December 31, 1969 11:00 AM

In many regards, Labor Day is considered the unofficial end to summer. Pools begin to close, kids head back to school... you begin that transition to Fall season.Today, a summer-like feel is in full-force. Heat and humidity, the main story all summer, have returned after a very comfortable weekend. Dew points are back into the 70s this afternoon as high temperatures rise to the 90s, making the heat indices near 100°.HEAT ADVISORYis in effect for eastern Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin Counties until 6pm on Tuesday.Because of the excessive heat and humidity, a First Warning Weather Day has been declared for Labor Day.A sub-tropical high is planted in the Carolinas, and the flow around that high is boosting temperatures into the 90s for the next few days. By late Thursday, a cold front sweeps through with some shower and storm chances. High pressure will build in to the north with an east wind, cooling western Mass into the 70s for Friday and the weekend. Friday into the weekend will have a distinct fall-feel, however it will be short lived. The East Coast high pressure ridge begins to build back in for next week, with all signs pointing to some middle 80s for highs.
In addition to the heat across the East Coast, the tropics are starting to heat up as well. Two tropical storms - Florence and Gordon - have been named over the last 48 hours. Tropical Storm Gordon looks to bring some impacts to the east coast of Florida before moving into the Gulf of Mexico, where it will bring some strong wind and heavy rain to the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf Coast. Peak of tropical season is September 10th, so the increase in activity is not surprising. Tropical Storm Gordon is still 5-7days out from knowing any possible impacts to the mainland US from the storm.
