Safety and Comfort for Playgrounds

Kelsey California
Guillermo

As a school administrator, safety is my top priority when it comes to our playgrounds. We chose GST's Shock Pads to go under our artificial turf, and they have exceeded our expectations. The padding provides a cushioned surface that reduces the risk of injury from falls. Parents and teachers have commented on how soft and safe the playground feels. Installation was straightforward, and the pads have maintained their shape and function over time. This is an excellent product for any playground or area where safety is a concern.

Our HOA prohibits artificial grass installation. What should I do?

This is a tough question, as we are very familiar with HOAs rules in state of California, but not necessarily all other HOAs throughout the the country. Most of HOAs are very strict with the front appearance of the houses in the community, and can be easy with backyards: so it will be a good idea for you to find out more detailed information and requirements from your HOA, and you can always feel free to send us those requirements at info!globalsynturf.com and we will be very happy to help you to provide necessary information and answer any questions from HOA. In cases that we have our service team in your area, we can even visit your HOA at their meetings to present our company and products.

What steps should I take to ensure safety for my artificial playground

Generally speaking, I can categorize artificial grass playgrounds as residential and public. Public playgrounds have strict requirements for fall ratings: from 5’ to 12’ or even higher which means people won’t get hurt if they fall from 5’ to 12’. In order to achieve such fall ratings while using artificial grass for public playgrounds, you will need to use lawn pads under the artificial grass to provide enough cushioning. Lawn pads come in as 3/4”, 1-1/4” and 2-1/4” in thickness. To achieve a 5’ fall rating, 1-1/4” thickness lawn pad is required. 2-1/4” thick lawn pad will provide a 8’ fall rating. In order to get higher fall ratings, multiple layers of lawn pads will be required.

What accessories do I need to ensure playground safety?

It is always recommended to use lawn pads under the turf for playground applications, especially for commercial playgrounds which require certain fall ratings. We carry different types of lawn pads which meets different fall ratings, for a 5’ fall, you will need to use 1-1/4” thick lawn pad, for an 8’ fall rating, 2-1/4” lawn pads will be needed. Any thinner thickness of either shock pads or lawn pads will not be sufficient to provide any fall ratings but only to provide cushioning. For residential applications, there is normally no specific fall rating requirements, and homeowners can go with or without lawn pad underpayments depending on the budgets. Other than lawn pads, all other accessories needed for a playground application will be the same as any other artificial grass installations. Is this ACTUALLY environmentally friendly?

Great question! This response will contain a lot of information, so let’s break it down into two sections, starting with the “clean” factor regarding different types of plastics. Hypothetically, let’s assume that the product was made of 100% recycled materials. Depending on how the materials are re-processed, post-consumer is usually the least “clean” when compared to virgin or actual plastic because of the variability of the feedstock. Even with blending, which adds overall strength, neither post-consumer nor post-industrial recycled materials can ever achieve 100% of mechanical properties of virgin materials. The degradation of these properties has a direct effect on safety factors and long term performance measures such as fatigue. This is not to say recycled plastics cannot be used in various applications, but does explain why recycled materials often have lower safety ratings. In other words, theoretically, you could have a 100% recycled material product. However, this product would never pass safety tests due to how weak the material would be. At GST, while we do care about the environment, safety is ALWAYS a top priority, as can be seen on our lead and UV testing results.

How does GST artificial grass handle pet odors and waste, and what is the recommended cleaning routine to maintain hygiene and odor control

Our artificial grass is permeable to discharge pets’ urine very efficiently, solid waste can be picked up the same way as you would on natural grass. To deal with pet odors, we recommend couple of options: use zeolite infill products which will neutralize smells or use our pet deodorizer spraying on the turf to eliminate odors. No routine maintenance really required, if you use zeolite infills, deodorant spray will become less necessary, in most cases, simply water down will sufficient.
