If your current slope is good enough for water to drain, you can install the turf directly onto your roof by using minimum spot glues: you will want to make sure that the turf glue used will cause no damage to your roof materials, it is always a good idea to test a small scrap to ensure the turf glue not eroding your roof materials. If the roof slope is not sufficient for water to drain, you can use drain board as an underpayment for the turf. You can find such drain underpayment by search “drain tile interlocking” on Amazon. I am not sure if I understand your question correctly, anyway, there are two possible scenarios here: installing artificial grass on top of the sandy area or installing artificial grass in an area that can be sandy. It is an easy answer yes if you live in an area that can be sandy with winds and etc., as long as you prepare the base correctly, it will be perfectly fine for sand to get on the artificial grass. If you are referring to if you can install artificial grass on a sandy base, the answer is NO. The artificial grass will be as good as its base: the base preparation is very critical for a good installation. Sandy base will be too loose and not solid enough for artificial grass, if artificial grass is installed over sandy area, you will very possibly see wrinkles, ripples, waves and dents on the grass surface, such issues not only destroy the appearance of the lawn, but also present tripping hazards.
