Roof Top Artificial Turf

Chicago Illinois
Vanna Grossley

I have been doing my research for an artificial turf company that would sell me turf for my roof top deck here in Chicago.  I was especially was concerned about drainage and the heat factor.  In the winter months we get lots of rain and in the summer it actually gets very hot.  I found Global Syn Turf online and called and spoke with Jerry.  Jerry knew a lot about turf including roof top applications, drainage and heat.  Once I spoke with Jerry at this company knew I had found my company and did not need to look any further.  Jerry reminded me that Global Syn Turf was the manufacturer of the artificial turf and that I had to work with their distributor in Chicago.  I called the Chicago turf dealer and purchased the artificial turf, drainage tile and the new turf cooling infill T-Cool.  Thank you Global Syn Turf for your great turf, expertise and network of friendly turf distributors.

Can I put the turf on a torch on roof?

Yes, our turf can be installed over a torched roof. If your current slope is good enough for water to drain, you can install the turf directly onto your roof by using minimum spot glues: you will want to make sure that the turf glue used will cause no damage to your roof materials, it is always a good idea to test a small scrap to ensure the turf glue not eroding your roof materials. If the roof slope is not sufficient for water to drain, you can use drain board as an underpayment for the turf. You can find such drain underpayment by search “drain tile interlocking” on Amazon. Once drain board being used, same minimal spot gluing method should be used for the installation. Can turf be glued directly to TPO membrane roof?

If your roof doesn’t have proper slope for drainage, we will recommend to use drainage board before installing turf. If drainage is not a concern, you can glue the turf on the TPO roof, but not to the entire area, only to “spot glue” as long as holding the turf in place. Can artificial grass be applied to a roof?

Artificial grass is the only best solutions for rooftops as the real grass won't grow. If people want to have lawn settings and landscape on a rooftop, the artificial grass is the only way to go! For the rooftop artificial grass installations, since you can't do excavations to create and build a sub base for an effective drain system, you will need to use drain boards instead for your base so the water will drain properly, therefore installation of artificial grass on a rooftop requires special expertise and need to be performed by professionals with good experiences and skillsets.

Can I use artificial turf on a sandy area?

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly, anyway, there are two possible scenarios here: installing artificial grass on top of the sandy area or installing artificial grass in an area that can be sandy. It is an easy answer yes if you live in an area that can be sandy with winds and etc., as long as you prepare the base correctly, it will be perfectly fine for sand to get on the artificial grass. If you are referring to if you can install artificial grass on a sandy base, the answer is NO. The artificial grass will be as good as its base: the base preparation is very critical for a good installation. Sandy base will be too loose and not solid enough for artificial grass, if artificial grass is installed over sandy area, you will very possibly see wrinkles, ripples, waves and dents on the grass surface, such issues not only destroy the appearance of the lawn, but also present tripping hazards. Even in a sandy area you still can install artificial grass by properly following our installation guidelines, you just can’t simply put artificial turf on top of sandy surface.
