GST’s Silica Sand is a great infill for artificial turf. It helps keep the turf blades standing upright and improves drainage, making the lawn look more natural and last longer. The sand was easy to apply, and it has kept my turf looking pristine through all kinds of weather. I highly recommend this product for anyone installing or maintaining artificial turf.
The only difference between regular silica sand and green sands are the color and price: our green sand is coated with green color which can technically blend in better with the artificial grass. Since the green sands take extra steps of coating and drying, the cost is higher than regular silica sand. Read Answer: Silica sand vs Green sand?
This is a very good question. The short answer is NO, the sand infills won't be messy once applied onto the artificial grass. On average, we recommend to use 1.5-2 lbs of infills for all artificial grass installations. Such amount of infills will sink straightly to the bottom part of artificial grass surface, under normal circumstances, the infills will be barely visible at all. Most of installations of artificial turf, it will be hard to see and feel the infills unless you spread the fibers and look for the infills. By that said, there is no concerns whatsoever that infills will make your artificial grass messy. One point I would like to make here is that if your installation is on a rather steep slop, from time to time, your infills can be washed out down the slope in such case, you might notice infills toward lower end of the slope. I always recommend to add additional infills if such washed away situations happen. However, if your installation is on a slope without much of usage or traffic, you can less worry about adding infills periodically. Read Answer: Does the sand infill get messy when you step on the artificial grass?
There are several reasons for using infills on artificial grass installations, couple of them are for general purposes, some of them are for specific purposes.
Read Answer: What happens if I don't apply sand infill for my artificial grass?
Infills are always important for artificial grass installations as it will not only help turf fibers standing up but also minimize the expansions and contractions of the grass to prevent wrinkles, seam and edge failures. To your specific question, in my opinion, sand is not the best infill, but the most expensive option. Most of people choose sand infills as it does the job without breaking the budget, there is nothing wrong with sand being an infill product, all other options such as green color and antimicrobial coated products will give you extra upgrades and also cost more.

All the infills on today’s market is relatively safe to use for artificial grass installation. The infills are meant to provide extra weight and hold the turf down better and help the blades to stand up. In most cases, if the infills are applied properly, it will sink all the way to the very bottom of the turf, you will not be able to see or get contact with it unless you spread open the fibers and put your fingers into the turf. However, to be 100% safe, we will recommend the wonderfill product which is sands coated with antimicrobial agent to prevent bacteria and germs and is extremely safe for your kids. The silica sand we carry for artificial grass installations is considered and “normal” sand. However, knowing there might be many other different type of sand products on the market, I personally don’t see a reason why you can’t use other normal sands for the purpose of infills. Keep in mind that the main purposes of using infills on the artificial turf are to hold the turf down with extra weight to minimize the expansion and contraction during temperature change and also to help fibers to stand up, by that said, normal sands will do the job. You will need to make sure using sands that not harmful to human or pets and at least to be kiln-dried, I definitely recommend against any sands with unknown properties or can cause harm to human, pets or environment.
