That lawn we have laid gauge is 15% larger than the sample the salesperson showed us. The sample is also softer. Can the salesperson still argue it is the same quality (eg stitch rate had increased to compensate?)

The key spec is the faceweight regarding your concern: our turf is manufactured on different machines, more specifically in 3/8”, or 1/2” or 5/8” gauges, in order to achieve the same faceweight, grass made on 1/2” gauge machine will have higher stitch rate, in another word, more stitches per 4 inch than 3/8” gauge. The yarn used for the same turf product is always the same but can be different dyelots. Your sample should be the same as your product in term of faceweight and look very similar in color: again, different dyelots between the sample and product can provide some very minor shade and color variations. Sometimes, the sample pieces might have been touched and felt a lot under indoor temperatures, when bring it outside placing next to the freshly installed turf in colder weather, the hand feel on the sample might be softer. If you leave the sample on the turf during a warm day, the hand feel on both should be very close. Stitch Rate is the number of stitches per inch in the length of synthetic turf. For example, the stitch rate of 14/10, means there are 14 stitches in 10cm.

Theoretically, if the tufting gauge remains the same, the higher the face weight, the higher of the stitch rate for most of the artificial grass products. The stitch count for artificial grass is a combination of tufting gauges and stitch rates, it is often referred the total stitches per square meter or square yard. In order to claim a "high stitch count", the artificial grass needs to have very tight tufting gauge and high stitch rates. The tufting gauge is the distance between two tufting lines, which ranges from 3/16" to 3/4", the narrower the gauge, the tighter of the grass; the stitch rates is the amount of turf stitches per 4" or 10 mm.

The more of the stitch counts of an artificial grass, the thicker is the product, meaning more fibers.
